Visuomotor associations facilitate movement preparation.

چکیده

Many motor skills require rapidly choosing a movement goal and preparing to that goal, such as in sports where circumstances often change quickly many actions are possible. Humans can benefit from learning the perceptual cues predict requirements of so choice preparation occur earlier. However, there remains uncertainty about how these learned. Here we investigate use perceptual-motor associations. First, ask if episodic memory for associations support learning. In Experiment 1, participants first memorized between symbols goals. When were subsequently presented cues, reaching movements prepared efficiently goals themselves previewed, without need additional practice. Next, whether statistical be used learn 2, had during task itself. This enabled efficient preparation, rate improvement scaled with number complexity These findings suggest facilitated by via recall, highlighting potential role systems not conventionally implicated behavior. The influence of movement preparation time on the expression of visuomotor learning and savings.

Following a change in the environment or motor apparatus, human subjects are able to rapidly compensate their movements to recover accurate performance. This ability to adapt is thought to be achieved through multiple, qualitatively distinct learning processes acting in parallel. It is unclear, however, what the relative contributions of these multiple processes are during learning. In particul...

Flexible Visuomotor Associations in Touchscreen Control

To move real objects, our hand needs to get in direct physical contact with the object. However, this is not necessarily the case when interacting with virtual objects, for example when displacing objects on tablets by swipe movements. Here, we performed two experiments to study the behavioral strategies of these movements, examining how visual information about the virtual object is mapped int...

Independence of Movement Preparation and Movement Initiation.

Initiating a movement in response to a visual stimulus takes significantly longer than might be expected on the basis of neural transmission delays, but it is unclear why. In a visually guided reaching task, we forced human participants to move at lower-than-normal reaction times to test whether normal reaction times are strictly necessary for accurate movement. We found that participants were,...

Changing brain networks for visuomotor control with increased movement automaticity.

Learning a motor skill is associated with changes in patterns of brain activation with movement. Here we have further characterized these dynamics during fast (short-term) learning of a visuomotor skill using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Subjects (n = 15) were studied as they learned to visually track a moving target by varying the isometric force applied to a pressure plate held in t...

Tuning curves for movement direction in the human visuomotor system.

Neurons in macaque primary motor cortex (M1) are broadly tuned to arm movement direction. Recent evidence suggests that human M1 contains directionally tuned neurons, but it is unclear which other areas are part of the network coding movement direction and what characterizes the responses of neuronal populations in those areas. Such information would be highly relevant for the implementation of...
